Limited-edition beauty products, Korean-themed character designs and collectible merchandise are changing how people shop for K-beauty.
What happens when a skincare retailer starts behaving a little like a collectible merchandise store? South Korea’s Olive Young has been exploring exactly that. Its 2026 collaboration with Sanrio Characters brought together beauty products, character designs, limited-edition gifts and interactive shopping experiences.
The campaign ran from August 30 to September 30, but its scale reveals something worth understanding beyond the promotion itself. K-beauty is increasingly sold as an experience, not simply a collection of products.
A collaboration involving 321 products
Olive Young’s 2026 campaign was called OLIVE YOUNG City Log. It brought together 81 participating brands and 321 collaboration products, making it the retailer’s largest Sanrio Characters collaboration at the time.
The range extended beyond conventional skincare and makeup into wellness and lifestyle products. A character collaboration can appeal to consumers who might not otherwise be interested in a particular beauty brand. Someone who loves Hello Kitty may discover a skincare pro
duct through its packaging. A gift shopper may choose a limited-edition set instead of an ordinary product. Collectors may be drawn to associated merchandise.

Hello Kitty received a distinctly Korean makeover
One of the most interesting elements was the campaign’s local identity. Instead of relying entirely on familiar international Sanrio imagery, Olive Young developed character designs inspired by Korean culture.
These included Hanbok Hello Kitty, featuring traditional Korean clothing, and designs associated with 12 destinations across Korea. Regional references included Jeonju bibimbap, Gongju chestnuts and Udo peanuts.
Globally recognised characters were connected with details that feel distinctly Korean. For international visitors, a limited-edition beauty purchase could become a souvenir associated with a specific place or cultural experience. The collaboration also appeared in selected store decorations and photo zones.
The merchandise was part of the attraction
The September campaign included several limited-edition gifts. Olive Young offered regional Hello Kitty fans, while later promotions featured school-uniform and hanbok-inspired Hello Kitty storage containers. At its Seongsu experience, visitors could encounter photo opportunities, collectible stamps and interactive activities.
These details made the campaign more than a packaging exercise. Customers were encouraged to explore stores, participate and collect objects connected to favourite characters.
Olive Young had already seen results from its previous Sanrio collaboration. During its July 2025 campaign, participating brands recorded a 60% year-on-year sales increase, according to the retailer, and its pop-up attracted approximately 33,000 visitors over three weeks. These are 2025 figures, not confirmed sales results for City Log in 2026.
Should international shoppers buy collectible beauty?
Limited-edition packaging can make an ordinary product feel special. But there’s a difference between wanting a collectible and needing skincare. Before buying, check the underlying formula: is it something you would choose without the character design, and does it suit your skin?
Some gifts require a minimum purchase, while others come only with specific products. Random designs and limited quantities can affect what you receive.
The September 2026 City Log promotion has ended. International shoppers should not assume gifts or promotional benefits remain available. Some products may still appear through retailers, but current stock and eligibility need checking.
The ThisKovery Take
K-beauty collaborations show how Korean consumer culture connects beauty with character fandom, design, travel and collecting. A skincare product can be practical, visually appealing and culturally distinctive. But while limited editions create excitement, the product beneath the packaging still matters. The smartest collectible purchase is one you’ll enjoy using as much as looking at.
